Just finished Devotion and I'm... underwhelmed with it? Idk, I went into it expecting a lot, and it just didn't quite hit for me. I don't have tons to say about it, I'm really just notating that I played it.
Starting out, I had a problem that I often have with darkness, where the game is using darkness to direct my attention by only lighting up select areas. But for me, that just means that I can't see where I'm going, so instead of being directed towards something, I can't tell if I'm looking at the floor or not. I went and turned my brightness all the way up, checked some let's plays to see if they could see anything. Eventually I got the hang of... walking... but there was always that friction I had with the visuals.
Narratively, it's alright. Like, I get what is going on, I don't think I missed anything important. It just didn't hit for me.
Interestingly, the bit - this is gross so heads up - where you pull your eye out is pretty accurate. The way they show the darkness on that side, but also how you can tell it's bleeding internally. That's pretty much exactly what mine looked like. They give you back your eyesight pretty quick for gameplay reasons, which makes sense, but if they'd've put a blur on the right side, with a gradient of intensity ending at just shy of the middle, then it would've been nearly as accurate as you can make it.
